Unlike Fair Trade cacao, which requires farmers to go through a lengthy and costly process just to ensure they are being paid a commodity price, direct trade establishes relationships with farmers and reports on the transactions to the buyers. Typically, the farmgate price is more than the commodity price.

Lacuna Cacao goes a step forward and encourages their buyers to connect with the farmers through travel or calls that can be coordinated through their office. We believe that a report is just scratching the surface of direct trade and we seek to establish a true working relationship between the buyer and the farmer and the chocolate maker.

We source the Nicaraguan beans through Lacuna Cacao, a nonprofit organization that partners with impoverished communities to better their living conditions.

Do you make the chocolate by hand?

Yes. Once the beans arrive at Tabal Chocolates we sort, roast, crack and winnow, grid, conch or aerate, temper, pour into molds, then wrap each bar by hand.

Where do you get the cocoa beans?

We get the beans through our communities in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Columbia, Nicaragua, and Peru.
